Most people think building a business is about money.

It is.

But for me, the biggest benefit was choice.

The choice to leave a job that no longer fit.

The choice to say no to work that drained me.

The choice to build around the life I wanted, instead of asking an employer to approve it.

And I think more people are starting to feel this now.

Every week, there is another headline about companies cutting roles, restructuring teams, or replacing parts of knowledge work with AI.

People who did everything “right”.

Even if you have:

You're still exposed.

A salary can feel safe until someone else decides the spreadsheet looks better without you in it.

Building your own business doesn't remove risk.

It changes the risk.

Your skills, audience, reputation, and offers start working for you outside one employer’s system.

That is why I keep talking about personal branding.

Not because everyone needs to become an influencer.

Because everyone needs LEVERAGE.

This doesn't happen overnight.

But neither does career security.

In 2026, I would rather spend six months building an asset I own than six months hoping a company keeps me on the right side of a restructuring.

That is what building my own business gave me.

Freedom, ownership and choice.
