👉 Save cash, Cut fat, Stay calm - Repeat

Every business has cycles - here's how you navigate through them with ease

This post from Leila is spot on.

So I decided to write about it and give you examples how to navigate business cycles.

Literally every business has cycles.

It’s the one thing that is guaranteed.

Things can be smooth, tough, or uncertain → but they always change.

Here’s the key to navigating those cycles successfully

When it's easy: Save cash. 💵

When business is going well, it’s tempting to spend.

But the best businesses know that in good times, it’s smart to build your buffer.

Set aside cash that will give you the freedom to pivot or handle leaner times ahead.

Example

You’ve just landed a big client, or your product is selling like butter.

Resist the urge to spend the money.

Instead, funnel some of that extra revenue into a savings fund for future growth or challenges.

I spent one year saving cash in my business before I paid myself.

(and no, I’m not rich, I planned well)

Almost 2 years in of paying myself every month; I still have the same salary.

I have no plan to give myself a raise either (tough boss I know 🤣)

I save cash 💰
And I invest it 📈

You can of course invest IN to the business as well.

But always make sure you have cash.

Because cash is always, always KING.

When it’s hard: Cut fat. 🏃‍♂️

Every business goes through tough times.

That’s when you need to trim unnecessary expenses and focus on what truly drives value.

Identify what’s not working and remove it. This could also mean that you need to let the C-players go.

Example 1

You know Jack Welch and his famous approach to leadership and business?

His rule was to:

Cut the bottom 10% every year.

He believed most teams are made up of 20% stars, 70% solid folks, and 10% who just aren’t a fit.

Something for you to think about it.

Example 2

Review your:

  • subscriptions

  • marketing expenses

  • contractors you work with

  • talent / team

  • and overhead

  • efforts

Could you eliminate some tools or services that aren’t giving you a return?

Trim those, and reallocate resources to areas with a higher ROI.

You can also reallocate your efforts: meaning spend time on the right things.

If you're a business coach, spend time with clients and outsource content creation to a freelancer or agency.

Why?

You're the best at business coaching.

Not content creation. Spending time with clients is better use of your time. And you make more money when you focus on the right things.

When it’s uncertain: Stay calm. 🧘🏻‍♀️

Uncertainty can make it feel like the sky is falling.

(I’ve heard from a lot of founders lately who are going through tough times. More on that below and how I can help)

But here’s the truth: adaptable businesses thrive in uncertain times.

This is when you show what you’re made of.

Are you a 🐫 or a 🦄?

Camels adapt to multiple climates, survive without food or water for months, and when the time is right, can sprint rapidly for sustained periods of time. Unlike unicorns, camels are not imaginary creatures living in fictitious lands. They are real, resilient and can survive in the harshest places on Earth. While the metaphor may not be as flashy, these startup camels prioritize sustainability, and thus survival, from the get-go by balancing strong growth and cash flow.

I love this famous quote from Alex Lazarow in Entrepreneur Magazine.

This article has been my inspiration for so much content I’ve created, I even put it in my banner on LinkedIn because this is the mentality a successful business should have:

The most important thing is to stay calm and focused.

Take a step back.

Reassess your situation.

And make decisions with clarity - do not panic.

Example

If you’re unsure about the market, don’t react impulsively.

Instead, gather data, consult your team/coach/mentor, and look for patterns:

  • Where are the margins high?

  • What is selling?

  • What is not selling /low sales?

  • What is asked for the most?

  • What are you not doing that you should be doing?

Then act accordingly:

Cut the fat 🔪
Focus 🎯

Then, move forward with a clear plan instead of letting the anxiety of uncertainty drive your decisions.

The most adaptable businesses win.

And adaptability doesn’t come from avoiding tough times, it comes from preparing for them and reacting with intention.

So, whether things are easy, hard, or uncertain, remember:

Save cash 💰
Cut fat 🔪
And stay calm 🧘🏻‍♀️

You’ve got this.

You need a bit of this mentality
